Supermarine Spitfire MkXVI

TE456

oops

Taken at Auckland War Memorial Museum. 1991. The first Spitfire I ever saw - although to my young eyes, tainted by too many WWII comic books - the four-bladed prop, and the bubble canopy looked all wrong.

This aircraft did not serve during WWII. Commisioned in 1951, it accumulated 638 hours before it was retired in 1956. The aircraft was then presented to the Museum by the Air Ministry at the request of Sir Keith Park.
