Ilyushin IL76M 'Candid'

Background

The IL76 was designed as a heavy frieghter for service with the military and in Siberia. The prototype first flew in March 1971, and the aircraft went into service with the Soviet military in 1974. in a transport role. Subsequently produced in a civil version (M and T models), the aircraft have been seen all over the world. Since the breakdown of the Soviet Union, some of these aircraft have been leased to western operators. The aircraft illustrated below was operated by Pacific Express in the 1991-93 period as a frieghter, making flights to New Zealand and around the world..
