Taken at Taranaki Aviation, Transport, and Technology Museum, March 1997. This mid-upper turret was recovered from the wreck of NZ277. The Oxford went missing in October 1942, while on towed-target duty. The aircraft apparently vanished into heavy cloud mid-morning while thought to be off the Taranaki coast. The remains were discovered in January, 1974 in the heavily forested Poukai ranges, some distance from where the aircraft was thought to have been lost. The turret is really quite tiny - so I hope the gunner wasn't a big guy. Note the yellow paint for a high visibility target-tug aircraft.
