Taken at Auckland War Memorial Museum. 1991. The museum building which dates from 1929 is also a War Memorial. This view is from the lawn in front of the building. The inscription above the entrance reads:

MCMXIV . . . MCMXVIII
THE WHOLE EARTH IS THE SEPULCHRE OF FAMOUS MEN
THEY ARE COMMEMORATED NOT ONLY BY COLUMNS AND INSCRIPTIONS IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY
BUT IN FORIEGN LANDS ALSO BY MEMORIALS GRAVEN NOT ON STONE
BUT ON THE HEARTS OF MEN

The names of the major battles in which New Zealanders participated during World War I are marked around the top of the building. The City Cenotaph is located on the steps, just to the left of the area shown.
